Custom Lists & Categories
Tailor HomeRunbook to your unique setup by creating custom device types, connection types, and brands.
Available on Professional and Enterprise plans.
Accessing Custom Lists
Click Manage → Custom Lists in the navigation. You'll see tabs for:
- Device Categories
- Connection Types
- Custom Brands
Device Categories
Define what types of devices can be added and how they appear on the map.
Creating a Category
- Name: A unique identifier (e.g., "3D Printer", "Wine Cooler", "Pool Pump")
- Group: Assign to "Electronics/Networking", "Electrical", or "Plumbing"
- Icon: Select from Bootstrap Icons or upload a custom image (PNG/JPG)
- Supports IP: Check for network devices to show IP/MAC fields in the device form
Built-in Categories
HomeRunbook includes common categories:
- Electronics: TV, Router, Switch, Server, Camera, Access Point, Game Console, etc.
- Electrical: Outlets, Breakers, Panels, Generators, Solar Inverters
- Plumbing: Water Heaters, Faucets, Shutoffs, Valves
Connection Types
Define the cables, wires, or protocols that connect your devices.
Creating a Connection Type
- Name: e.g., "XLR", "Thunderbolt", "Zigbee", "PEX", "Romex"
- Group: Controls which specification fields appear:
- Electronics: Speed/Bandwidth
- Electrical: Voltage/Amperage
- Plumbing: Diameter/Material
- Color: Pick a hex color (e.g., #FF00FF) for the line on the map
- Line Style: Solid, Dashed, or Dotted
- Is Wireless: Check for wireless protocols (auto-sets dashed style)

Custom Brands
Adding brands to your custom list provides:
- Autocomplete: Brand names appear in suggestions when adding devices
- Consistency: Prevents typos and variations (e.g., "Sonos" vs "sonos")
- Team standards: Ensures everyone uses the same brand names
Custom Icons
Upload your own icons for device categories:
- Supported formats: PNG, JPG
- Recommended size: 64x64 to 256x256 pixels
- Icons appear on device chips in the Visual Mapper
- Replace default Bootstrap icons with real product photos
Account-Wide Customization
Your customizations apply to the entire account:
- All team members see the same custom options
- New team members automatically get access
- Custom items appear alongside built-in options in dropdowns
Best Practices
- Be specific: "Cat6 Ethernet" is more useful than just "Cable"
- Use consistent colors: Create a visual legend your team can follow
- Group logically: Keep electrical separate from network for clarity
- Upload icons: Custom icons make devices instantly recognizable
- Document your standards: Create a notebook page explaining your custom types
