Getting Started with HomeRunbook

Welcome! This guide will walk you through creating your first documented room in just a few minutes.


What is HomeRunbook?

HomeRunbook is a visual documentation tool for your entire home infrastructure. It combines an interactive infinite canvas with comprehensive inventory management, letting you see how everything connects while tracking every detail.

Quick Start: Your First Map

Create an Account

Sign up free at homerunbook.com. No credit card required. You can also use Google, Microsoft, GitHub, or Apple to sign in quickly.

Create Your First Room

From the dashboard, click "Create New Room". Give it a descriptive name:

  • "Network Closet" or "Server Room"
  • "Living Room" or "Home Theater"
  • "Mechanical Room" or "Garage"

Add Your First Device

Click Add Device in the toolbar. Fill in the details:

  • Category: Router, Switch, TV, Server, etc.
  • Brand: The manufacturer name
  • Model: The model number
  • Serial Number: For warranty tracking (optional)
  • IP Address: For network devices (optional)

Click Save and your device appears on the infinite canvas!

Connect Devices Together

Select the Connect Tool from the toolbar, then:

  1. Click the source device (e.g., your router)
  2. Click the destination device (e.g., your switch)
  3. Choose the connection type (Ethernet, HDMI, Coax, etc.)
  4. Add optional port numbers or specifications
  5. Click Save Connection

A color-coded line with signal direction arrows now shows the connection!

Arrange Your Map

Make your map easy to read:

  • Drag devices: Position them to match your physical layout
  • Auto Layout: Click to automatically organize by category
  • Zoom: Use Ctrl/Cmd + Scroll to zoom in/out
  • Center: Click to fit all devices in view

The canvas expands automatically as you add more devices.

You're ready! You've created your first documented room. Keep adding devices and connections to build a complete picture of your infrastructure.

Create separate maps for each location. Use cross-room connections to link devices between rooms with visual "room boxes".

Click + Drag (background) Pan the map
Right-click (device) Cross-room connection menu
Double-click (room box) Navigate to that room
Escape Exit connect or delete mode
